Giving birth in Denmark outside hospitals
In Denmark a small percentage (1 - 2%) of all births take place
outside hospital units. These births are home-births with a public
midwife as the birth-attendant (free of charge) or in rare situations
with a private midwife.
In one part of Denmark there is established a special home-birth
arrangement. In this arrangement all women wanting to give birth
at home go to antanatal visits with a group of midwives, one of
which will come to the home to deliver the baby and do the postnatal
visits. The arrangement is a success and the number of women giving
birth at home has increased after the arrangement which started
as a project, and it is now a permanent arrangement.
This shows that a larger number of women will choose to give birth
at home if the offer from the public health service system meets
their demands of for instance continuity in care.
